Positive Energy Outdoors offers a high quality outdoor education progression for young people from preschool through 12th grade. Our day camps for children and youth who have completed grades K-8 introduce young people to the world of outdoor education--a blend of physical skill building, positive social interactions and time in nature.  We are a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.  Click to apply for our Camps Scholarship Program.  If your child qualifies for reduced or free lunch at school, you qualify for assistance. Our focus is on supporting girls to develop positive images of themselves, their abilities, and their connection to the outdoor world.  $300

February Winter Break Day Camp gives children a week of winter exploration, skill building and play outside as well as lots of time for dog sledding with our kennel of friendly Alaskan huskies!  February 19-23, 2018.


Winter Break Day Camp gives children 3 days to explore and play. In addition to snowshoeing and learning winter survival skills, like building a snow shelter or lighting a winter fire, you'll get to meet our sled dogs  and draft horses!   Dec. 27-29.


Take a day trip to Positive Energy Outdoors for dog sledding, a horse drawn sleigh ride, snowshoeing and plenty of time to play in the snow!  Bring a lunch, water bottle and gear to spend the day outside (clothing list provided in confirmation e-mail).  Van transportation provided from Marshall School to and from our site, 15 miles north of Duluth near Island Lake.  Positive Energy Outdoors will provide hot drinks.


Families want to make memories in the outdoors but wonder if everyone (especially the kids) will have fun.  Each year, Positive Energy Outdoors helps hundreds of families like yours try new outdoor activities together through our Family Adventure Tours.  These 2 hour beginner-friendly outdoor activities ensure your family, no matter their ability or age, will have a blast.  It's easy to get started.


1. Book your Family Adventure.  Love the water?   Paddle a stable kayak or 12 passenger canoe on the warm, calm water of Fredenberg Lake.  Climb at an indoor gym with the kids?  Climb outdoors at Ely's Peak, a beginner friendly crag with spectacular St. Louis River views.  Dog or horse lover in the family?  Take a sled dog kennel tour, go for a dog sled ride or drive the horses on a sleigh or wagon.


2.  Read the confirmation e-mail.  You'll receive directions to the tour site, a detailed list of what to bring and wear, and the assumption of risk form.


3. Meet out staff at the tour site.  Enjoy family-friendly instruction and take advantage of unforgettable photo opportunities as you make memories you'll talk about for years to come.

Family Kayak Tour

Are you looking for a family-friendly kayaking tour that's great for children 4-12 years of age?

join us on our beautiful private inland lake for a Family Kayak Tour!  We have youth-sized kayaks so kids can paddle on their own!


Tour includes:


- Proper kayak outfitting, basic paddle strokes, and techniques

- How to enter and exit the kayak from shore or a dock

- Rescue skills including the wet exit, solo and assisted rescues and braces (optional)


Up to six people: $275. Tour lasts approximately 2 hours.


Start times: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.  Tours offered 7 days a week.


You can also add an optional Family Sled Dog Kennel tour at 9 a.m. for an additional $75.

Family Rock Climbing Tour

Are you looking for family-friendly rock climbing that's great for children 4-12 years of age?

Join us in Duluth at the Whoopie Wall in West Duluth or at Ely's Peak near Spirit Mountain for a morning of rock climbing.


Tour includes:


-Introduction to safety equipment, harness and helmet fitting, and anchor set up.

- Learn how to tie climbing knots, practice belaying techniques, and receive coaching as you climb from Blake Cazier, one of the region's most experienced climbing guides.

- Hear stories about the unique natural and geological history of the region and the rocks you are climbing on.


Climbing at Ely's Peak:  $475 for 4 hours.

Climbing at the Whoopie Wall:  $275 for 2 hours.


Start times: 8 a.m. for Ely's Peak and 9 a.m. for the Whoopie Wall. Tours offered 7 days a week.

The 45 minute Family Wagon Ride introduces your family to our team of friendly Percheron draft horses. You’ll learn about the horses and go for a wagon ride through the maple forest with a stop at Fredenberg Lake.

Family Canoe Tour

The 2 hour, beginner-friendly Family Canoe Tour introduces your family, no matter their ability or age, to voyageur canoeing in our 26.5 foot big canoe. You’ll feel safe and have a blast paddling the warm, calm water of Fredenberg Lake.

No previous canoeing experience is necessary. The Family Canoe Tour is perfect for all ages. You do not have to know how to swim to participate in the Family Canoe Tour. Positive Energy Outdoors provides all equipment (including adult and child size life jackets) and instruction. Directions and a list of what to bring and wear is provided in the confirmation e-mail.

Add on a Sled Dog Kennel Tour!

The 1 hour Family Sled Dog Kennel Tour introduces your family to our kennel of 55 friendly Alaskan husky sled dogs. You’ll learn about the life of a sled dog in the summer, see the sleds and equipment Positive Energy Outdoors uses for training and mushing, and spend lots of time petting and playing with the dogs.  Tours run daily at 9 a.m.
